No faith in Govt’s action against Bond scam- JVP

Chief Opposition Whip MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake says he has no faith in the government taking action against those responsible in the Bond scam.

MP Dissanayake said the authority to take legal action against those accused lies with the Attorney General’s Department, the judiciary or the Bribery Commission.

He added however these institutes are being controlled by some political force claiming the public should not believe that such institutions will take legal action against the same political forces that control them.

Meanwhile leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella said the UNP is prepared for a debate adding the report has already been sent to the Attorney General and the Bribery Commissioner.

Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake added another report containing details of how the former President utilized his power, how state resources were utilized for election propaganda activities, details on the Avant Garde case and issues of the Ministry of Construction and Common Amenities were also tabled in Parliament.

He also said a number of important reports over how state resources were utilized by certain political leaders were tabled and therefore a debate should be held in Parliament before the 10th of February.

Alaska Earthquake Prompts Tsunami Warning

Alaska Earthquake Prompts Tsunami Warning

A tsunami alert has been issued after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Alaska in the US.

It hit 280km (173 miles) south-east of Kodiak, at a depth of 25km, at 00:31 (09:31 GMT), the US Geological Survey said.

The US National Weather Service says a warning is in effect for the coasts of Alaska and British Columbia, while the US west coast is on tsunami watch.

But the tsunami watch for the islands of Hawaii and Guam has been cancelled.

Officials in Anchorage warned coastal areas, saying there was “extraordinary threat to life or property”.

The alert told people to seek refuge on higher ground in affected areas. Residents in several places around the Gulf of Alaska were told to leave. They included Homer, Seward, Kodiak, Sitka and Unalaska, a source at Alaska Public Radio told the BBC.

According to Kodiak police, officials had reported water receding from the harbour.

The police said that “at this time the tsunami warning is still in effect. Remain at high ground”.

“We have received two reports that the tide levels have been fluctuating in the channel six inches to one foot (15-30cm).

Many residents in Kodiak left by car in the middle of the night.

Law and Order Minister slams conduct of Police in Kataragama

Law and Order Minister slams conduct of Police in Kataragama

Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayake today slammed the conduct of the Police in Kataragama where a tense situation arose over the weekend.

Ratnayake said that when quelling a tense situation or an unruly demonstration, justifiable force should be used, in strict adherence to operating guidelines, to bring it under control.

However he said it appeared that these fundamentals had not been followed in relation to the incident in Kataragama.

“The Police themselves are subjected to the law,” the Minister said, adding that he communicated his concerns to the Secretary of his Ministry and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) at a special meeting yesterday and directed them to initiate action against those responsible without delay.

“I do not believe that the conduct of certain Police officers in relation to the Kataragama issue is an isolated development. This conduct stems from lack of training and professionalism. If we fail to address the core issue diligently, we will be thrown into similar situations time and time again. Therefore, drastic reforms will be introduced to the Police service, with the support of international experts, in the near future,” he added.

The Police fired tear gas and made several arrests as Kataragama erupted on Sunday following overnight tensions resulting from a shooting incident.

A tense situation arose in Kataragama after the Police shot dead a motorcyclist who ignored orders and failed to stop.

Area residents who were outraged over the shooting attacked the Kataragama police station.

As the situation escalated, the Police fired tear gas towards the unruly crowd.
Singapore and Sri Lanka sign free trade agreement

Singapore and Sri Lanka sign free trade agreement

Singapore and Sri Lanka signed a free trade agreement on Tuesday (Jan 23) which will deepen economic ties and facilitates greater trade flows between the two countries.

The Sri Lanka-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (SLSFTA) was signed by Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran and Sri Lanka’s Minister for Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena witnessed the signing in Colombo.

With the deal inked, Singapore and Sri Lanka companies will gain greater access to each other’s markets across many sectors, said Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) in a news release.

TARIFF ELIMINATION ON MOST SINGAPORE EXPORTS, ACCESS TO GOVT PROCUREMENT

Outlining the key benefits of the agreement, MTI said Sri Lanka will over 15 years, eliminate tariffs on 80 per cent of Singapore’s exports.

This means a potential tariff savings of about S$10 million each year, it added.

The ministry said the agreement also contains one of the most liberal rules of origin, which will allow more exports from Singapore to qualify for the lower tariffs negotiated.

It includes Sri Lanka’s first treaty commitment on government procurement. This will allow Singapore companies to bid for projects by several of Sri Lanka’s large central entities and state-owned enterprises.

Singapore and Sri Lanka are also committed to granting better access to each other’s services markets, said MTI, adding that the agreement includes sectors of interest to Singapore companies in the professional and trade-related services as well as environment, construction and tourism.

The SLSFTA also covers cross-border transfers of information by electronic means and data flows. MTI said this will benefit Singapore and Sri Lanka companies given the increase in demand for e-commerce and digital services.

There are also safeguards against discriminatory treatment based on nationality and protection against expropriation.

Under the agreement, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre is listed as an institution where Investor-State disputes can be heard. MTI said this is aligned with the objective of promoting Singapore as an arbitration hub.

SRI LANKA’S FIRST MODERN AND COMPREHENSIVE FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

The deal is Sri Lanka’s first “modern and comprehensive” free trade agreement and will, said MTI, “position Singapore as an early and supportive partner of Sri Lanka’s economic liberalisation plans and development.”

To date, Singapore companies have established a presence in Sri Lanka in sectors such as construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, food and services. There are currently about 90 Singapore companies in Sri Lanka.

MTI said Sri Lanka was Singapore’s 36th largest trading partner in 2017, and bilateral trade amounted to S$2.7 billion. Singapore’s exports to Sri Lanka totalled S$2.5 billion, while Singapore’s imports from Sri Lanka totalled S$178 million.

Singapore’s top exports to Sri Lanka include petroleum and diesel, non-monetary gold and jewellery, while top imports from Sri Lanka include motor spirit, fuel oils, perfumes, clothing accessories and wheat flour.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia about the agreement, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Singapore Nimal Weeraratne noted that both governments had found that they could come up with a “modern, comprehensive and higher value free trade agreement” between both countries.

“It will liberalise trade and service, it will improve investments into Sri Lanka, and it will give a shot in the arm to manufacturing and service,” he said.

He added that the SLSFTA would “certainly be helpful” to small and medium enterprises and other prospective investors interested in Sri Lanka.

“As a result of the provisions, the investors will be given national treatment, and national treatment would make them feel that they are part of the Sri Lankan business community,” he said. “In addition, we also have the Avoidance of Double Taxation (DTA) treaty which was ratified in January.”

“The FTA and DTA will immensely facilitate business activities for would-be Singaporean investors.”

Suresh Raina Roars With 49-Ball Century

Star left-hander Suresh Raina on Monday roared back into form with a 49-ball century for Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Bengal. Raina remained unbeaten on 126, helping his team post 235/3 in 20 overs. Raina's 59-ball stay at the crease included 13 fours and 7 sixes. Akshdeep Nath played a fine supporting role with a 80-run knock. Sourav Ganguly, who is president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) was seen applauding Raina's knock from the sidelines

Raina's fitness was one of the things that kept him out of the national side. It's been more than two years that he is out of the ODI side and last played for India in a T20I against England in January last year.

Having cleared the yo-yo fitness test which is mandatory to stay in contention for the national side, Raina said he has worked a lot on his skill as well as physical strengthening.

Terming it "very demanding", Raina said: "It's one aspect you do everyday and it's not only about gyming alone. It's about spending time on the field. You have to have a street smart brain."

"You have to bowl at the nets for two hours everyday, you have to be on your toes. And you have to be strong in shoulder to bat well."

"Gyming is one thing but you have to do a lot of strengthening as well. At the same time you have to ensure that you body regroups. It's very much demanding. Still I would say it's 40 per cent gym and 60 per cent skill," Raina added.

Asked about the motivation to play in the Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, he said: "I play each and every tournament with the same intent. The tournament has many big names and before the IPL and upcoming Asia Cup it's a nice opportunity."

The CSK vice-captain further said the tournament will give him an opportunity to see the talented youngsters ahead of the much-anticipated IPL auction on January 27 and 28.

"There are a lot of exciting youngsters like Rinku Singh, there's also Kuldeep (Yadav) who will play a couple of matches before heading to South Africa. It's a chance to see many youngsters," Raina said.

Raina also backed the under-fire Indian team who had already lost the ongoing Test series in South Africa. Raina, however, argued that Virat Kohli's men have done decently and pointed out India's bowling was a revelation in in the first two Tests in South Africa.

"They have done well, almost won the first Test. We fought hard and bowled well. South Africa too have not been able to score runs against us. From four innings they (South Africa) are yet to score a century," he said referring to Virat Kohli's 153 in the second Test at Centurion.

"Our batting has done well in patches. We have to support the team. We cannot dismiss them, we have some big names who have done well over the years," he concluded.

Twenty women petitioners including veteran actress Swarna Mallawarachchi had filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court today challenging the 1979 law which prohibits the sale of alcohol to women.

Earlier, 11 women including artiste Samanalee Fonseka filed the first FR petition in the Supreme Court challenging the archaic law.

Human rights activist Menaka Galgamuwa said the 1979 law not only discriminatory against women but also insulting.

“This is not about women consuming alcohol. Nowhere in the 1979 law, it states that women can’t consume alcohol. It stresses on women buying alcohol. As long as men can buy alcohol, the 1979 law is discriminatory against women. Also, it is insulting on the ground that women can consume alcohol if a man buys and offers them alcohol,” she told the Daily Mirror.

Compère and social activist Savithri Rodrigo and Chloe De Soysa, the founding chairperson of Women’s Chamber of Commerce are also among the 20 petitioners who filed the FR

Europe readies riposte to Donald Trump’s “America First” push in Davos

Europe readies riposte to Donald Trump’s “America First” push in Davos

European leaders will be out in force at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week to defend multilateralism before US President Donald Trump arrives to deliver his “America First” message. Politicians, business chiefs, bankers and celebrities will meet in the Swiss Alps under the banner “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World” for the four-day gathering against an unsettling global backdrop.

A decade after the bankruptcy of US investment bank Lehman Brothers helped trigger a global financial crisis, economic growth has returned and stock markets are hitting record highs. Yet there is a nagging fear among many in Davos that the brighter economic outlook could turn out to be little more than a mirage if the daunting array of geopolitical threats – from protectionism and climate change to cyber attacks and outright war – gather pace in 2018.

“Not all geopolitical threats are threats to financial markets,” Axel Weber, the chairman of Swiss bank UBS and former president of the German Bundesbank told Reuters. “But I agree that there may be a disconnect, which has been going on for some time already and may well continue for some time.”

The Global Risks Report published by the WEF last week showed that many see a heightened risk of political and economic confrontations between major powers this year. Trump, the first sitting US president to attend the forum since Bill Clintonin 2000, is a source of much of this anxiety after a volatile first year in office in which he has turned American foreign policy on its head.

The forum will open on Tuesday with a speech by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and end on Friday, when Trump is due to address the massive auditorium where Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke last year, offering to fill the global leadership void created by an inward-looking Washington.

White House officials said over the weekend that a government shutdown in the United States was unlikely to prevent Trump from making the trip, although the budget director Mick Mulvaney said it was now “in flux”. In the days between Modi and Trump, the leaders of Europe’s biggest countries, absent from Davos last year and emboldened by their own economic recovery, will offer an alternative vision to Trump and Xi, who the Europeans say has failed to deliver on his promise of a year ago to open China up to foreign investment.

Europe’s new star

The charge will be led by French President Emmanuel Macron, the new star of European politics, who in an audacious move, has invited many of the business leaders who will be in Davos to the Palace of Versailles on Monday to press them to invest in France.

When he speaks in Davos on Wednesday, the former investment banker will offer his own “diagnosis” of globalisation and set out a vision for addressing widening inequalities, global warming and the rise of nationalism, his advisers say.

“I don’t think Macron will be able to resist being the counter-Trump,” said Robin Niblett, director of the Chatham House think tank in London.

Macron will be joined by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, returning to the world stage after months of political limbo at home, and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, back in Davos after a 20-year absence, is also due to speak. The WEF is a marathon of panel discussions, lunches and cocktail parties that delve into subjects as diverse as terrorism, artificial intelligence and wellness.

This year’s conference will include several sessions on sexual harassment, a nod to the #MeToo movement that erupted after allegations of sexual misconduct by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Criticised in past years for not representing women, the WEF appointed seven female co-chairs this year, including Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Ginni Rometty, the CEO of IBM.

Among the other leaders attending are British Prime Minister Theresa May, Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu and several African leaders, including Zimbabwe’s new president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Last year, the sole envoy from the Trump camp in the week leading up to his inauguration was Anthony Scaramucci, the New York financier who was sacked after just 10 days as White House communications director. This year, Trump will be joined by a large US delegation including Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

For the first time in years, Iran will not be represented. WEF officials could not say whether the late cancellation by Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif had anything to do with Trump’s decision to speak.
Honor 9 Lite review: The best mid-end phone money can buy

Honor 9 Lite review: The best mid-end phone money can buy

We’ve seen a slew of smartphones from Chinese companies in the budget and mid-budget segment in India. Huawei’s sub-brand Honor is one such player, which has been actively pushing devices in the Indian market these days, with its latest offering being the Honor 9 Lite. The phone is essentially a stripped down version of the Honor 9i, which was announced in October.

Featuring dual rear and front cameras, along with a Full View display, the Honor 9 Lite caters to the budget audience with a price-tag starting at Rs 10,999. It sports a dual 2.5D glass design, and runs Android 8.0 Oreo. Another highlight of the Honor 9 Lite is it ships with EMUI 8.0, which is the company’s latest OS. We spent some time with the Honor 9 Lite, and here is our full review.

Honor 9 Lite specifications: Honor 9 Lite specifications: 5.65-inch full HD + resolution (2160 x 1080 pixels) with 18:9 aspect ratio | Kirin 659 | 4GB RAM+64GB storage (expandable to 256GB) | 13MP+2MP rear camera and front camera | 3000 mAh battery | Android 8.0 with EMUI 8.0

Honor 9 Lite price: Rs 10,999 for 3GB RAM+32GB ROM, Rs 14,999 for 4GB RAM+64GB ROM

Honor 9 Lite review: What’s good?

For those who’ve been looking for a budget phone with a design other than full metal body, Honor 9 Lite comes as a refreshing change. Honor 9 Lite looks far more glamorous than most phones in this price range, thanks to its stunning double-sided 2.5D glass design and bezel-less screen. The phone is surprisingly light at 149 grams, which I liked.

Honor 9 Lite features a Full HD+ resolution display, hard to find in the Rs 11,000 price range. The screen looks vibrant, crisp and I did not face any issues while using the Honor 9 Lite display in bright sunlight. I was impressed with the viewing angles as well. A Full View display is fast becoming standard on devices these days, and the feature surely made my viewing experience better, especially while watching videos and playing games.

Honor 9 Lite offers a nifty performance when it comes to daily usage. I could open multiple tabs and switch between them seamlessly on the 4GB RAM variant of the Honor 9 Lite. The phone can handle most basic games like Candy Crush Saga without any hitches. During my review period, graphics-heavy games like Asphalt-8 worked pretty good as well with a very little lag. The fingerprint sensor is fast, as it unlocked the phone almost instantly each time I tried.

The camera on Honor 9 Lite won’t let you down. The rear dual sensors are capable of clicking some great and detailed shots, especially in bright outdoors. It is at par with most other devices in this price-range that I’ve reviewed. There’s a bokeh mode for photos along with a Portrait mode for clicking portrait shots.

Except in cases where pinks and reds tend to look a little too bright, I was satisfied with the colour reproduction in most cases. The camera is quick to focus, but it takes an extra second or two in low-light conditions.

Honor 9 Lite runs the company’s EMUI 8.0, based on Android 8.0 Oreo. The user-interface is pretty simple and you can swipe right to access apps. The phone ships with Huawei Share, a feature similar to Apple’s AirDrop, which lets Huawei users seamlessly share files with other Huawei devices. The WiFi+ feature automatically switches between Wi-Fi connectivity and mobile data, whichever is stronger.

What’s not good?

The battery on Honor 9 Lite disappoints, especially when you look at competition like Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. It gives you a day’s worth of life on light to moderate usage and takes a long time (almost two and a half hours) to charge fully from six per cent. My daily usage included listening to music online, streaming videos, playing games, and browsing social media.

Do note that you’ll have to be extra careful with this one, as a slight fall can easily lead to cracks given this is all glass. This is probably the reason why Honor is giving away a free case with Honor 9 Lite. The phone can pick up fingerprint smudges quite easily, something one needs to be careful about at all times.

Verdict

Honor 9 Lite is a good buy if you want a stylish phone that offers a decent overall performance and a good camera. However, battery is a crucial factor for me when it comes to narrowing down on a phone. While Honor 9 Lite seems like a good deal at Rs 10,999, remember this price is for the 3GB RAM variant and you only get 32GB space, which is low when compared to devices in this price-bracket. You can also look at options like Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, M1 A1, or Moto G5s Plus.
England beat Australia by 16 runs in Sydney to clinch ODI series

England beat Australia by 16 runs in Sydney to clinch ODI series

England defeated Australia by 16 runs in the third one day international at the Sydney Cricket Ground Sunday to clinch their five-game series with two games to spare and hand the world champions their first ODI series defeat at home since 2010.

After being thumped 4-0 in the Ashes test series, England’s limited-overs players produced a stunning turnaround to beat the Australians three times in a week, outplaying the home team both when chasing and defending big totals.

Needing to win Sunday’s match to keep the series alive, Australia brought their best fast bowlers together for the first time since the Ashes but it was to no avail as England’s middle-order pounded Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood and Pat Cummins at the death to post an imposing total of 302 for six.

Jos Buttler hit two runs off the final ball to complete his first ODI century against Australia after sharing an unbroken 113-run partnership with Chris Woakes that proved the difference between the sides. The tourists had looked to be in trouble after slumping to 189-6 in the 39th over but rebounded in spectacular fashion with Buttler belting six boundaries and four sixes to finish 100 not out from just 83 balls, while Woakes chipped in with five fours and cleared the rope twice to remain unbeaten on 53 off only 36 deliveries.

The Australians did not help themselves in the field, bowling 13 wides and dropping three catches, including one off Buttler when he was on 70. The Englishman had another scare on 97 when he was given out leg before wicket on the first ball of the last over but the decision was correctly overturned on review after replays showed the ball hit the edge of his bat.

Buttler took a single off the next ball and didn’t get back on strike until the final delivery, but managed to squeeze Starc’s attempted yorker into the legside field and scramble through to reach his hundred, leaping into the air with excitement. Australia’s reply began poorly when Dave Warner and Cameron White both went cheaply but Steve Smith’s men were thrown an unexpected lifeline when England paceman Liam Plunkett pulled a hamstring in his second over and was forced off the field, leaving the tourists a bowler short.

Most of the Australians made starts but none was able to go on and post a big number to match Buttler’s electrifying rate. Aaron Finch, who made centuries in each of the first two matches, top scored with 62, while Marcus Stoinis (56) and Mitchell Marsh (55) also made half-centuries after Smith was controversially given out for 45 when caught behind by Buttler although replays were inconclusive as to whether the ball had carried through.

Padmaavat Protest turns violent in Gujarat, buses set ablaze in Mehsana, Gandhinagar

Protests turned violent in Gujarat on Sunday over the screening of the controversy-riddled Bollywood period drama Padmaavat. The film, which is slated to be released across the country on January 25, is witnessing backlash from fringe groups, including Shri Rajput Karni Sena, in various states. The situation turned grim in Gujarat where protesters burned buses and resorted to violence. Buses were burnt in Gandhinagar, Mehsana and Ahmedabad districts of the state by protesters demanding a ban over the film.

Meanwhile, in view of the violence, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner issued a notification stating that those protesting near multiplexes, malls will be booked under section 308 of IPC (attempt to commit culpable homicide). The BJP governed state was one among the four which banned the film from releasing before the Supreme Court’s order. Gujarat Police DGP appealed for peace and said that to prevent untoward incident police are making preventive arrests, public buses in several routes had been stopped. “I appeal the protesters not to indulge in violence,” he added.

The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) suspended its bus services in northern part of the state, following violent protests by Rajput community members. The bus services were suspended in Mehsana, Patan,
Gandhinagar, Sabarkantha and Banaskantha districts till the situation improve.

The film, after much delay, is set to be released in a few days on January 25. However, some multiplex owners have already indicated they might not screen the film over continuous threats of vandalism by Karni Sena and other similar groups. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh government which too had banned the film in the state is all set to approach the Supreme Court. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during an event in Indore said, “We will again knock on the apex court’s doors.”

In a bid to threaten multiplex owners, Karni Sena members distributed a memorandum in all the theatres asking them not to screen the movie. When asked what they would do when the film is screened, they said, “Wait and watch what happens on 25th.”

The Supreme Court had cleared Padmaavat for nationwide release by staying the notifications of Rajasthan and Gujarat governments, which had prohibited screening of the film following protests by the Rajput community. The court had also restrained other state governments from issuing similar orders. Similarly, the BJP government in Rajasthan has also decided to file a review petition in the apex court against its order allowing the release of the Deepika Padukone-starrer epic drama.

Pillayan’s TMVP contests LG polls in bid to regain lost ground

The Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal (TMVP) led by Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, alias Pillayan, is contesting the Local Government (LG) elections in a bid to regain lost ground in the political arena.

TMVP spokesman Azath Maulana told the Colombo Gazettethe TMVP will be contesting the LG polls in Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Amapara.

The TMVP says the main focus of the party will be Batticaloa, an area it once dominated politically when Mahinda Rajapaksa was President.

“Our campaigning for the election is going well and we have good support from the public,” Maulana said.

Maulana said that the political activity of the TMVP is continuing despite Chandrakanthan remaining behind bars.

Chandrakanthan was arrested on October 11, 2015 when he arrived at the CID office in Colombo to give a statement over the killing of former Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham. He has been in remand custody since then.

Maulana said that the TMVP has been in touch with Chandrakanthan through their lawyers and has his guidance for the LG elections.
